Off the Highway, Into the Warm

The Alaska Highway is generous with scenery and stingy with dinner. There are long stretches north of Whitehorse where the only thing on the shoulder is spruce and gravel, which is why a lit window in Haines Junction reads as more than a restaurant. Ours sits at the front of the Kluane Park Inn, and the door opens at noon.

Inside it is unfussy and warm — tables with room to spread out a map, and the steady hum of a room where locals and travellers end up side by side. Nobody dresses for dinner here. People come in off the Kluane trails, out of a fourteen-hour drive, or from a shift down the road, and the room takes all of it in stride. Wi-Fi is free across the whole property, so you can check tomorrow's road conditions before the plates are cleared, and parking costs nothing.

Chinese and Western, One Kitchen

Two cooking traditions share the same kitchen here, which is not something the Yukon interior offers often. Tables regularly order in both directions at once.

Chinese

Chinese food is hard to come by on this stretch of road, and for Chinese-speaking travellers driving the Whitehorse–Kluane run it can be the difference between sitting down to a proper meal and eating whatever the last stop had left. We cook Chinese dishes every day we are open. This page is written in Chinese as well as English for exactly the same reason: a good share of the people who eat here read it.

Western

The other half of the kitchen turns out the familiar Western cooking you want at the end of a long drive north — hot, straightforward plates brought to a table rather than handed over a counter. It is the kind of food that turns a highway stop into an actual stop instead of a refuel.

The Bar, the Lounge, the Pool Table

Through from the dining room there is a bar and lounge: beer, wine, and light bites for anyone who wants a drink more than a dinner. It is the quieter, later half of the building — the room you end an evening in rather than start one.

There is a pool table in the lounge. In June, when the sun refuses to set and nobody can quite tell what time it is, a game of billiards is as good a reason as any to stay another hour before you go up to bed.

Indoors, or Out in the Long Light

Seating runs both indoors and outdoors. Take an outside table in summer if one is free — this far north the light holds until nearly midnight, and eating with the mountains still lit is the part of the Yukon people remember long after they have forgotten the drive.

When the weather turns, and in Haines Junction it turns quickly, the indoor room is the whole point: warmth, a table, and no wind.

The Dining Room for the Whole Property

This is where hotel guests eat, and where everyone parked in the RV park eats, but it has never been a guests-only room. Walk in whether or not you are staying with us: highway drivers, day hikers coming out of Kluane National Park, and people who live in Haines Junction all end up at these tables.

And if dinner talks you out of driving any further tonight — which happens more often than you would think — there are rooms and RV sites on the same property, a short walk from your table.
